To hire Matlock at a New York law firm, they would have had to verify the status of her law license through one of three official mechanisms, each carefully managed by the state. This would include verified identity, address, current license status, disciplinary actions, etc. "Matlock in name only". I’m not sure if the showrunner or CBS executives meant to reuse Matlock’s name.

The biggest plus is, of course, Kathy Bates

Bates a performance worthy of her skills

The writing and direction will need to step up to give Ms. Pilots can be hard to figure out sometimes. Is this the best it will get or can they improve to meet or exceed expectations? I hope it gets better, although the trailer for the next episode doesn’t give me much hope.

Maybe it was just the editing of the trailer and the series is better than it seems

They have set "Matlock" like a very smart character but then you seem to want to play it off for slapstick? Since NBC has consigned L&O: Organized Crime to the phantom (pay TV) zone, I have an opening on Thursday nights and it may just fill that slot.
